Our Story

Here is the history and mission behind Biophilia, where nature and education thrive together.

Biophilia was established with a vision to create a space where nature and education come together to inspire and empower visitors. Located in the heart of Quepos, Costa Rica, Biophilia is dedicated to the preservation of biodiversity and the promotion of sustainable practices. Our mission is to foster a deeper connection with nature through immersive educational experiences.

Butterfly Garden: A Haven for Biodiversity

The Butterfly Garden at Biophilia is home to around 25 species of butterflies native to the area. Our garden is designed to educate visitors about the life cycle, behavior, and ecological importance of these beautiful insects. By planting host plants, we help support the proliferation of butterfly species, ensuring their survival and contribution to our ecosystem.

Medicinal Plants: Nature's Pharmacy

Costa Rica is home to a rich diversity of medicinal plants, with over 300 species used for various medicinal purposes. At Biophilia, we cultivate a wide variety of these plants, educating visitors about their uses and benefits. Our Medicinal Plants Garden features more than 90 species, offering a hands-on learning experience about the natural remedies available in our environment.

Bamboo Projects: Sustainable Innovation

Bamboo is a cornerstone of our sustainable practices at Biophilia. Known for its rapid growth and versatility, bamboo is used in various construction projects within the reserve. Our bamboo structures, designed with the help of experts like Jörg Stamm, showcase the harmony between traditional building techniques and modern sustainable innovations.

Wildlife Conservation: Protecting Our Natural Heritage

Biophilia is committed to the conservation of wildlife within our reserve. Our efforts focus on creating and maintaining habitats that support a diverse range of species, from butterflies and birds to mammals and reptiles. By preserving and restoring natural habitats, we ensure the survival of native species and contribute to the overall health of our ecosystem.

Educational Programs: Inspiring Future Generations

Education is at the heart of Biophilia’s mission. We offer a variety of educational programs designed to engage and inspire visitors of all ages. Our programs include guided tours, workshops, and hands-on activities that teach the importance of conservation, sustainability, and biodiversity. By fostering a deeper understanding of our natural world, we aim to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards.

Community Engagement: Building a Sustainable Future

Biophilia works closely with the local community to promote sustainable development and environmental awareness. Our initiatives include community-based conservation projects, educational outreach, and collaborative efforts to create a greener, more sustainable future for Quepos and beyond. By involving the community in our mission, we create a collective effort towards environmental preservation and sustainable living.
