Our Story
Here is the history and mission behind Biophilia, where nature and education thrive together.
Butterfly Garden: A Haven for Biodiversity
The Butterfly Garden at Biophilia is home to around 25 species of butterflies native to the area. Our garden is designed to educate visitors about the life cycle, behavior, and ecological importance of these beautiful insects. By planting host plants, we help support the proliferation of butterfly species, ensuring their survival and contribution to our ecosystem.
Medicinal Plants: Nature's Pharmacy
Costa Rica is home to a rich diversity of medicinal plants, with over 300 species used for various medicinal purposes. At Biophilia, we cultivate a wide variety of these plants, educating visitors about their uses and benefits. Our Medicinal Plants Garden features more than 90 species, offering a hands-on learning experience about the natural remedies available in our environment.
Bamboo Projects: Sustainable Innovation
Bamboo is a cornerstone of our sustainable practices at Biophilia. Known for its rapid growth and versatility, bamboo is used in various construction projects within the reserve. Our bamboo structures, designed with the help of experts like Jörg Stamm, showcase the harmony between traditional building techniques and modern sustainable innovations.
